Setting Up the Shells Blanket

Row 1

Ch4, *work 1 dc in the 4th chain from the hook, ch1; repeat from * six times. Slip stitch into the 3rd chain of the starting ch4 to join the round.
(The beginning ch4 counts as the first dc.)

Row 2

Ch1, sc in the first ch1 space (the 4th chain of the beginning ch4), *7 dc in the next ch1 space, sc in the next ch1 space; repeat from * three times. Work 7 dc in the next ch1 space and slip stitch to the first sc to join.

You should now have 4 shells and 4 sc stitches.

Row 3

Ch4. In the same stitch, work:
1 dc, ch3, 1 dc, ch1, 1 dc
(this creates the starting V-stitch cluster).

*Ch5, skip the next 7 dc, and work a V-stitch cluster in the next sc. Repeat from * two more times until you have a total of four V-stitch clusters. Ch2 and dc into the 3rd chain of the starting ch4.

Row 4

Work 7 dc in the next ch1 space, sc in the ch3 space, and 7 dc in the next ch1 space to create a shell cluster. Sc into the 4th dc (the center dc) of the shell from the previous row, making sure the sc wraps around the ch5 space to secure it.

Work a shell cluster in the next V-stitch cluster, then sc into the middle dc of the shell below. Repeat this sequence around the blanket.

Row 5

Ch4, dc in the same sc to create the first V-stitch on the side of the square. Ch5, then work a V-stitch cluster into the sc of the next corner shell cluster.

*Ch5, work a V-stitch into the next sc between shell clusters, ch5, and work a V-stitch cluster into the sc of the next corner shell cluster. Repeat from * two more times.

Finish with ch2 and dc into the 3rd chain of the starting ch4.

Row 6

*Work a shell in the first V-stitch, sc into the middle dc of the shell below, shell cluster into the next V-stitch cluster, and sc into the middle dc of the shell below. Repeat from * around the blanket.

Main Body Repeat

Once the setup rounds are complete, continue repeating the following two rows to grow your blanket.

Row 7

Ch4, dc in the same sc (counts as the first V-stitch).
*(Ch5, V-stitch in the next sc) across until you reach the first corner. Ch5, work a V-stitch cluster in the corner.

Ch5, work a V-stitch in the sc between the next shell clusters, ch5, and work a V-stitch cluster in the center sc of the next corner shell cluster. Repeat from * around the blanket.

After completing the fourth corner, continue working ch5 and V-stitches into each sc between shells until you reach the starting V-stitch. Finish with ch2 and dc into the 3rd chain of the beginning ch4.

Row 8

*Work 7 dc in the next V-stitch, then sc into the middle dc of the shell below. Repeat from * until you reach the next corner V-stitch cluster.

Work a shell cluster into the corner V-stitch cluster, then sc into the middle dc from the row below. Repeat around all four corners.

Continue repeating Rows 7 and 8 until your blanket reaches the desired size, ending with a Row 8 repeat for the final round.

As the blanket grows, you’ll notice the beautiful structure taking shape. The V-stitch clusters remain only in the four corners, helping the blanket keep its square shape, while the V-stitches along the sides create an elegant flowing design between the shell clusters.

The combination of textured shells and airy spaces gives this blanket a soft, graceful appearance that’s both cozy and decorative.

Happy crocheting, and enjoy creating your beautiful Shells Blanket!
